Hokies TE Mitchell to don No. 25 for Pitt game

BLACKSBURG — Southwest Virginia football fans will see a familiar face wearing an unfamiliar number on Saturday at Lane Stadium.

Virginia Tech tight end James Mitchell, a Big Stone Gap native and Union alum, will forgo his recognizable No. 82 and don Frank Beamer’s No. 25 when the No. 25-ranked Hokies (7-3, 4-2) welcome Pittsburgh (7-3, 4-2) for their 3:30 p.m. Atlantic Coast Conference collision (ESPN2).

The 6-foot-3, 252-pound sophomore is in the midst of a breakout season. Mitchell hauled in four catches, including a touchdown, for a career-best 90 yards in last weekend’s rout of Georgia Tech, giving him 18 receptions for 325 yards and two scores this year. He’s also been a force in short-yardage situations where he’s registered three rushing touchdowns on four carries.

Each week, coach Justin Fuente chooses a special teams player of the week to wear the No. 25 as a tribute to Beamer, the legendary Hokies coach and Hall of Famer. This is the first time Mitchell has been awarded the honor.
